Last night was George Clooney’s Broadway debut, as his play Good Night and Good Luck premiered at New York City’s Winter Garden Theatre—but missing from the event was his wife, Amal Clooney.
George both wrote and stars in the stage adaptation of his 2005 movie Good Night, and Good Luck, and celebrated its Broadway opening on April 3 solo. There was good reason why Amal wasn’t in attendance, though—per People, George said Amal missed out because “she’s with the kids.” The couple, married for over 10 years now, share 7-year-old twins Ella and Alexander.
The Clooney family of four recently relocated to New York City to support George as he took on Broadway, and Amal has plenty of time to see the show—it runs until June 8.
“They love being here,” George said on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in February of his family’s relocation to the Big Apple. “I mean, come on, how do you not love this? It’s New York City.”
Of his new work/life balance, George added, “Actually, a play is kind of a good schedule because you’re working at night. You get to see the kids during the day, so it’s okay.”
Though in the 2005 film George played producer Fred W. Friendly, on Broadway George stars as the real-life character of CBS journalist Edward R. Murrow, whose exposé of U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy is the subject matter of the show. Of the family’s relocation, “George and Amal have been loving being in NYC,” a source told Us Weekly last month. “They usually don’t spend that much time in the city, so they have a lot of people they have been seeing. They both go to work during the day, and the twins are here with them, too.”
The outlet added that the couple have also “hosted a few dinner parties for friends,” but added “they are very much a couple who enjoys more private date nights.”
Speaking to The New York Times in February, George said of Amal, “I’m proud to be in the same room with her. I’m proud to be her husband. I’m proud to be the father of kids with her.”
He continued, “I told Amal, ‘We have to focus on the next 20, 25 years of making sure that we’re jamming in everything we can.’ Not just work, because no one at the end of their life goes, ‘God, I wish I worked more.’ There’s a thing about finding the person that you needed to find, particularly at a certain age, and everything from then on is easy.”
