ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter originally reported Wednesday that ownership of the NWSL’s Kansas City Current, which includes Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany Mahomes, has met with the WNBA. On Wednesday, KCTV confirmed with a source that Patrick and Brittany have met with the league.
Schefter said Kansas City is in contention to be one of the cities the league expands to.
The WNBA has said the league would like to expand from 12 to 16 teams by 2028. Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said the city should be a no-brainer for a new team in an interview with KCTV last week.
I think Kansas City is excited,” Lucas said. “We have shown a propensity to support professional athletics and women’s athletics. I think we are the ‘belle of the ball’ if you look at CPKC Stadium, the Current, and all of the excitement.”
KC Sports Commission President Kathy Nelson echoed Lucas’ sentiment.
“Kansas City is a perfect place to support a WNBA team,” Nelson said on Oct. 24. Wednesday, Nelson reacted to Schefter’s report with three hearts in a post on social media.
In March, the KC Current opened the first women’s professional sports stadium in the world. This week, it’s hosting the Big 12 Women’s Soccer Championship, just a week after the Current became the first NWSL team in league history to sell out all of its home matches.
“I think there is enough love and support in Kansas City sports fans’ hearts to support two women’s professional teams,” said KC Current VP of Marketing Jocelyn Monroe.
Patrick Mahomes also has ownership stakes in the Kansas City Royals and Sporting KC.
