Though the couple reportedly grew up within 15 minutes of each other in London, they didn’t actually meet IRL until years later (call it fate, people!), when Victoria was *the* Posh Spice of the Spice Girls and David was out here casually playing soccer with Manchester United.

According to David’s accounts on the Ellen DeGeneres Show (via the Mirror), “She came to a football match—soccer match—and I said hi from across the room and that was it.”

“I thought I’d missed my chance, and then a week later she turned up at another football match,” the athlete continued.

Their second meeting was luckily a lot more robust, per a later interview David had with Jimmy Fallon on the Tonight Show: “We talked for about an hour in the players’ lounge and then she actually got the train up that day, so she wrote her number down on her train ticket, which I still have.”
