Former NFL star Doug Martin has died at the age of 36, his family have confirmed.
The two-time Pro Bowl selection was drafted in the first round of the 2012 draft and spent six seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
He finished his tenure in the league with the Oakland Raiders in 2018 before retiring.
“It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning,” a statement from his family said.
“Cause of death is currently unconfirmed. Please respect our privacy at this time.”
Tributes started to flow for Martin on social media following the news of his passing.
Tampa Bay released a statement for one of the franchise’s favourite sons.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of Doug Martin,” the statement said.
“From his record-setting rookie season in 2012 to his multiple Pro Bowl selections during his six seasons as a Buccaneer, Doug made a lasting impact on our franchise.
“He was a fan favourite during his time in Tampa Bay and was honoured as one of the top 50 Buccaneers of all time for his numerous achievements.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and everyone whom Doug touched throughout his life.”
The in-form Bucs will play on Tuesday morning (AEDT) against the Detroit Lions.
His college team, Boise State, also shared a message after Martin’s death.
“Doug Martin, one of Boise State’s best running backs in school history and a seven-year NFL veteran, passed away this weekend,” the school’s website said.
“Martin is one of six Broncos to be selected in the first round of the NFL draft. He was the first Boise State running back to be taken in the first round and is one of only two Bronco backs to be selected in the first round.
“Ashton Jeanty joined him in that club this past April.”
